A little history on every page

A history in paper. A future in making.
Some stories begin with a single sheet of paper. Ours began in Madras in 1942.
Sree Sayee Company, now Sayee Paperworks LLP, began by importing fine paper from Scandinavia and distributing it across India. Paper was where it all started. Over time, the business grew into bookmaking, notebook supply and finishing, building a knowledge of materials, construction and craft that has passed through generations.
Much of this work found its way into classrooms across Chennai. For decades, we supplied notebooks to schools and colleges, becoming a small, largely unseen part of everyday learning. The books that held a student’s first handwriting, carried pages of lessons or filled an entire academic year were part of a much larger story of making — one that unfolded quietly, notebook by notebook. There is a good chance that if you went to school in Chennai, you used a notebook that passed through our hands.
Over the years, we learnt that making a book is about more than putting paper and covers together. It is about understanding how materials work, how a book should feel in your hands, how its pages hold up to use, and how the smallest details can shape the experience of using it. These are lessons gathered over time, through practice, patience and generations of making.
The Paper Collective grew from this foundation, with a desire to take that knowledge somewhere new.
We bring together our understanding of bookmaking with a contemporary perspective on design, materials and everyday life. Our notebooks, journals and albums draw on traditional skills and modern techniques, with each element considered for how it looks, feels and functions. We work with different materials, explore new forms and keep refining the details — always looking for a thoughtful balance between utility, character and design.
Today, we remain a small team with a deep affection for paper and the possibilities it holds. We believe in objects that are useful without being ordinary, thoughtfully made without being precious, and designed to become part of the lives they enter.
Because a notebook is never just a notebook. It is a place for thoughts to land, ideas to take shape, plans to unfold.
To bring the joy of writing back into everyday life through thoughtfully made notebooks that hold our thoughts, ideas, plans and stories. In a world that moves increasingly to screens, we believe in the simple pleasure of putting pen to paper — a way to pause, create, reflect and stay connected to ourselves.
